WHAT IS THE DIAGNOSIS OF GILLES DE LA TOURETTE SYNDROME?

The symptoms of Tourette syndrome vary greatly from one individual to another. The main feature of the condition is tics, both motor and auditory. These are almost always accompanied by psychiatric manifestations. Patients' tics are uncontrollable and often occur intensely and repeatedly. Not all types of tics are present in a person at the same time; they may appear and then disappear, to be replaced by another type of tic.

DIAGNOSIS

According to the DSM-5 criteria, the disease begins before the age of 18, motor and vocal tics appear regularly for more than a year and are not due to drug use or another neurological disease.

The severity of the disease is measured objectively using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS).

The diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome is said to be differential, as it is sometimes necessary to rule out other pathologies such as epilepsy, OCD, certain dystonias, Huntington’s disease and traumatic or infectious brain injury.
